How Long Does It Actually Take to Get Prescription Glasses Online?

This is one of the most common hesitations people have about ordering prescription glasses online: what if something goes wrong, and how long am I actually waiting? Here's a transparent breakdown of what happens between placing your order and the box arriving at your door — including the parts that can add time, so you know what to expect before you order, not after.

The Full Timeline, Step by Step

Ordering prescription eyewear online isn't a single shipping countdown — it's actually several distinct stages, each with its own timing:

1. Order placed and prescription submitted Once you check out, you'll receive a secure link to submit your written prescription (and your pupillary distance, if you haven't already provided it). This step depends on you — the faster you submit a clear, valid prescription, the sooner production can start.

2. Prescription review Before anything goes into production, your submitted prescription is reviewed to confirm it's valid, current, and consistent with what you've ordered (lens type, add-ons, etc.). If anything looks unclear or inconsistent, we'll reach out to you directly rather than guessing — this is a deliberate quality step, not a delay for its own sake.

3. Lens fabrication This is where your specific lenses are actually made — ground to your prescription, with whatever material, coatings, or tints you selected. Base fabrication typically takes several business days on its own, and certain options extend this further (more on that below).

4. Quality check and assembly Once lenses are fabricated, they're fitted into your frame and checked for accuracy before shipping. This step exists specifically to catch errors before they reach you, rather than relying on you to catch a mistake after the fact.

5. Shipping transit Once your order ships, transit time depends on the shipping method selected at checkout — our standard Economy option runs 5 to 8 business days within the US, with faster options available at checkout for an additional cost.

Total estimated time, start to finish: typically 7–14 business days for production, plus 5–8 business days for standard shipping — so realistically, most orders arrive within roughly two to three weeks of your prescription being submitted and confirmed. Orders with more complex lens options can run longer; see below.

What Can Add Extra Time (and Why)

Being upfront about this matters more than a vague "delays may occur" disclaimer, so here's specifically what extends production:

  • Progressive lenses generally take longer to fabricate than single vision, since they require more precise multi-zone grinding
  • Photochromic (light-adaptive) lenses often need additional processing time to properly cure the light-reactive coating
  • Polarized lenses, especially combined with tinting or mirror coatings, can add processing time compared to standard tinted lenses
  • High-index lens materials (like 1.67) sometimes require different fabrication equipment or scheduling than standard polycarbonate
  • Unclear or incomplete prescription submissions — if we need to follow up with you or your prescriber to confirm details, this pauses production until resolved

None of this means something has gone wrong if your order takes a bit longer than the baseline estimate — it usually just means your specific lens combination requires more careful fabrication.

Why This Takes Longer Than a Same-Day Retail Pickup

If you're used to walking into an optical shop and picking up simple lenses in an hour, online prescription orders can feel slow by comparison. The difference is scale and process, not necessarily inferior quality: in-store labs are often doing quick, common jobs (basic single vision, no unusual customization) at a physical location with same-day equipment access. Online orders route through dedicated fabrication labs that handle a much wider range of lens types, coatings, and prescriptions, which introduces production queuing and specialized processing time that a walk-in shop's simple jobs don't require.

What Happens If Something's Wrong When It Arrives

We understand that waiting weeks for glasses only to find they don't feel right is a real concern. If your prescription doesn't match what was submitted, or something about the fit or lenses seems off, contact hello@aldermiller.com right away — we review the specifics case by case rather than applying a blanket policy, since prescription errors and simple fit adjustments are handled differently.

The Honest Bottom Line

If you need glasses immediately — for an event, a trip, or an urgent replacement — ordering online is likely not your fastest option, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than have you order and be frustrated by the timeline. If you have a couple of weeks of flexibility, online ordering gives you a wider selection, direct pricing, and the ability to order from home — with a clear, honest timeline instead of a vague promise.

Have a specific timing question before you order — like an upcoming trip or event? Email hello@aldermiller.com and we'll give you a straight answer about whether we can realistically meet your timeline.
